Senior Adviser, Alfa Bank

Roman Shpek is senior adviser at Alfa-Bank (Ukraine), which he has served as vice-president since 2008. Since 2010, he has also been the adviser to President of Ukraine and Member of the NBU Supervisory Board. Alfa-Bank, part of the Russian-based Alfa Group which also operates in Belarus and Kazakhstan, is the largest private commercial bank in Ukaraine.

Before taking up his current appointment, Mr. Shpek held high-level diplomatic and political posts. In 2000-2008, he served as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the European Union, in which post he played a key role in developing relations with European institutions and promoting trade and political links.

In 1996-2000, he was Head of the National Agency for Development and European Integration, coordinating ministerial activities in securing and disbursing bilateral and multilateral loans to Ukraine and improving the investment climate.

He served as vice-prime minister of Ukraine on economic policy (1995-1996), minister of economy (1993-1995), first deputy economy minister (1992-1993), privatization minister (1992) and deputy minister for forestry, woodworking and the furniture industry (1989-1992).

Mr. Shpek graduated from the Lviv Institute of Forestry Engineering and later gained an MBA in international economics from the International Management Institute in Kyiv (1991).
