Rebecca Heino

Executive Director & Senior Lecturer: Communication division, School of Professional Studies at Columbia University (USA)

Dr. Rebecca Heino is the Executive Director and Senior Lecturer for the Communication division of the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University. She is responsible for the Strategic Communication, Executive Master of Science in Strategic Communication, and Narrative Medicine master’s programs and the American Language Program. Previously she was a Teaching Faculty of Management at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and continues as an affiliate.

Dr. Heino teaches courses in leading teams, management communication, social intelligence, leading change, critical conversations, cross-cultural intelligence and presentations for master’s programs in communication and finance, MBAs, executive master’s in leadership, and executives. She works with executives on effective leadership, emotional intelligence, communication, conflict management and cross-cultural fluency. Recently she has become a Georgetown Certified Leadership Coach.

Dr. Heino has worked extensively in executive education, teaching clients such as Nextel International, International Finance Corporation, Rio Tinto, Nigerian Institute of Management, AARP, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Dr. Heino has also led leadership development sessions for companies such as KPMG, Goldman Sachs, CoStar, Justice, AOL, Pfizer, and GlaxoSmithKline.

Her global reach includes leading the South Africa Global Integrative for Georgetown MBA students, teaching executive courses in India, Singapore, Poland and Australia, and running a leadership summit Costa Rica, Brazil, and Argentina. She has also been a visiting professor in London for the University of Southern California, focusing on the study of global organizations and British media.

Dr. Heino’s research focuses on the use of communication technologies, such as intranets and email, within organizations. She is also interested in researching the use of communication technologies in self-representation to create relationships. Her published articles have appeared in journals in management such as Organization Science, Communication Research, Journal of Computer-mediated Communication, and Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. Dr. Heino has been the recipient of best paper awards by the International Communication Association and the European Academy of Management.

Dr. Heino received a B.A. in Speech Communication from Pepperdine University. Subsequently, she completed her master’s degree and then Ph.D. in Communication at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California. She is certified in Baron’s EQi, DISC, CQ (cultural intelligence), and ExperienceChange, and has a Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University. Dr. Heino is an avid USC Trojan’s Football fan and has attended two World Cups in Germany and South Africa.
