Dr. Vijay Khole
Vice Chancellor of Amity University
Dr. Vijay Khole is a unique combination of excellent academic career along with outstanding achievements in academic administration not only as Director, Institute of Science, Aurangabad, but also as Founder Registrar of Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded, Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai and finally reaching to the post of Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai.
Born in an ordinary family in Pune, Dr. Khole completed his education upto postgraduate level in the University of Pune and later went to erstwhile USSR to complete the Ph.D. and post-doctoral programmes in Bio-physics. He has had the fortune of working in one of the most prestigious Institute viz. Institute of Nuclear Physics in the Science-City of Novosibirk, Russia.
Dr. Khole has many achievements both on the academic as well as administrative side at the national as well as at international level. Dr. Khole has the necessary experience of initiating and implementation of several academic programmes. The extensive international exposure that he has attained has resulted in introduction of several new concepts and reforms in academics and administration at Swami Ramanad Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded and at University of Mumbai, Mumbai.
The University of Mumbai in particular has immensely benefited from his rich experience in academics and academic administration. Dr. Khole has played an instrumental role in introducing several new courses of applied value, vocational courses, the duel degree programme, certificate and diploma programmes in Garware Institute of Career Education, add-on-value programmes in affiliated colleges and also created tremendous awareness about the assessment and accreditation process as per the provision of NAAC.
In the capacity of Pro- Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai, Dr. Khole successfully planned,executed several xamination reforms and strategies and succeeded in declaring all the major results including those of professional streams in time year after year.
Important academic contributions of Dr. Khole include establishment of Department of Information Technology which conducts Under-graduate and Post-graduate programmes, introduction of B.E. (Marine Engineering), B.E. (Biotechnology), M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Biotechnology), M.Phil.(Defense Studies), M.Com. (E-Commerce) etc. He also took keen interest in introducing the scheme of “Best College” award, “Best Teacher” award on the University campus and worked tirelessly to establish Industry-University interaction and meaningful international linkages.
Dr. Khole‟s contributions at Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded as Founder Registrar were well appreciated by the First Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Janardan Waghmare in his book „Vice-Chancellor‟s Diary‟ (in Marathi).
Dr. Khole took initiative in laying down foundations for the administration and establishment procedures. He also implemented the „school‟ concept in the University. In addition complete computerisation of the Examination Section was achieved.
Besides, while working as Registrar or as Officer on Special Duty at Department of higher & Technical Education (Mantralaya) or as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Khole was either a member or has chaired most of the State level Committees constituted for Universities in Maharashtra. These included making uniform Statutes, Ordinances, making amendments to the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, Act of Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, modifying the standard code for non-teaching staff, centralised admission procedure for B.Ed. admissions, Assessment and accreditation of colleges in Maharashtra etc.
Dr. Khole has a teaching experience of more than 30 years exclusively at post-graduate level. His areas of teaching have been varied and range from Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics and Molecular Biology.
Dr. Khole has published 60 research papers, exclusively in inter-disciplinary areas like Biophysics in national and inter-national journals with high impact factors. He has also published over 20 popular articles. His book and chapters in the books are published by Ellis Horwood, U.K. and Marcel Dekkar, U.S.A. He has also been working in the areas of higher education viz. costing of higher education, academic administration, University Act, quality awareness, quality assurance, quality assessment and accreditation in higher education etc.
Dr. Khole has worked as Vice-Chancellor of University of Mumbai for a complete term of five years. He is one of the Vice Chancellor who has successfully completed his term and implemented many more academic and research programs in the University of Mumbai. Dr. Khole also organized sesquicentennial celebrations (150 years) of the University where all the stalwarts in the different areas including the Prime Minister, the President, the Chief Minister, other prominent Central and State Ministers were invited to deliver lectures / orations.
After departing from University of Mumbai in September 2009, Dr. Vijay Khole has worked as President, Kohinoor Education Trust for four years, and as President, Jaro Education for about a year.
He has also worked as an Advisor on several Educational Institutes / Trusts to provide the input for academic excellence.
Now, Dr. Vijay Khole has taken over and is working as the First Vice Chancellor of Amity University, Mumbai, the First Private University of Maharashtra since September 2014.
